Broncos start Tim Tebow in 2nd half

DENVER -- The Denver Broncos went with Tim Tebow at quarterback to start the second half Sunday against San Diego and he nearly led them to a comeback win.

Tebow ran for a touchdown and threw for another after replacing Kyle Orton to start the third quarter and had one final shot for the win before his pass fell incomplete in the end zone on the final play. The Chargers held to win 29-24.

"Tim Tebow sparked the team today. (But) we haven't had a chance to watch the tape, we haven't had a chance to watch the film, we haven't had a chance to visit as a staff," coach John Fox said after the game. "So, I think at this point -- we have a bye week -- we do need to improve offensively, and it will all be up for discussion."

Denver doesn't play again until Oct. 23 when they'll visit Miami.

"I have no idea," Tebow said. "Thankfully, I don't have to make those decisions. Other people do that and I just go play football."

A fan favorite, Tebow was instantly greeted with a chorus of cheers as he trotted onto the field. The crowd was so loud that Tebow couldn't hear the play call in his helmet.

"He came and gave us a spark," running back Willis McGahee said. "That's Tim Tebow. Everybody has been cheering for him for the longest. Now he finally got in and moved the ball for us."

Tebow went three-and-out in his first series and finished 4 for 10 for 79 yards. He also ran six times for 38 yards.

Orton had a horrible first half, completing 6 of 13 passes for 34 yards. He also threw one interception.

Tebow was involved in one play during the first half, gaining 2 yards on a carry.

Columbus Day is more complex than it looks

Once upon a time, American history was a simple story we told to feel good about ourselves. George Washington chopped the cherry tree; Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Problems arrived only to be solved — slaves were hardly mentioned until right before Lincoln freed them.

The nation was run by white Anglo-Saxon men, and naturally they cast themselves in all the hero roles.

Eventually, the forgotten supporting cast grew tired of being in the shadows — women got the vote, blacks demanded civil rights, immigrant groups inserted themselves into the American story. That’s why Monday is Columbus Day, one of just 10 federal holidays.

“I’ll tell you how it happened,” said Dominic Di Frisco, president emeritus of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans. “The Italian immigrants arrived after the German immigrants, after the Irish immigrants. They saw events like the Von Steuben parade and decided they needed a political hero. Christopher Columbus is not much of a figure in Italy. They said, my God, this country is named after him — the District of Columbia, Columbus in Ohio, in Georgia. He was the hero, a symbol of Italian pride, the first immigrant.”

Columbus was on coins and stamps. Chicago held its World’s Columbian Exposition.

So what changed? Why is Columbus now frequently a villain? Well, the same process that put Columbus Day on our calendar — heretofore marginalized people insisting their part in the story be told — kept going, to include Native Americans. They don’t feel Columbus discovered anything — the Indians knew they were here all along — and given how quickly the Europeans began murdering, enslaving and pushing aside indigenous peoples here, to them there isn’t much to celebrate, which is why there’s a card widely posted on Facebook: “Let’s celebrate Columbus Day by walking into someone’s house and telling them we live there now.” A fair synopsis of what happened, minus the genocide.

And yet perhaps because I learned the 1970s history catechism, where national unity trumps the complaints of each individual group, I feel for the Italians, who just want to be part of the story and celebrate themselves without having to wipe the blood of the slaughtered off their hands every October.

What bothers me most about the “Let’s celebrate . . . ” card is the casual declaration of free-floating guilt that we liberals seem to have mastered. What are you saying? You’re sorry the nation was founded? At least Native Americans have a reason to say that, though, like everybody else, their narrative is also self-serving — heavy on “Dances with Wolves,” light on the hearts-torn-out-atop-pyramids-to-honor-Quatzequatel.

The Aztecs were the most violent state in recorded human history, so it isn’t as if, had Columbus never arrived, the American Eden would remain to this day. To post that card is hypocrisy. Europe’s still there. Go back if you feel so guilty about living here. I sure don’t. My ancestors never killed an Indian or owned a slave. They were selling rags in Poland when all this was going on, and America was the golden door a handful fled through before the most cultured and sophisticated society in Europe put the rest in ovens. That still doesn’t prompt me to show up at German Unity Day and wave pictures of Auschwitz. The past is a lousy place to live.

So I have sympathy for Italians on Columbus Day; though really — Columbus, Balbo, Berlusconi — there is a pattern of clinging to bad choices here.

“He was one of the great navigators of history, and we’ve taken that away from him,” said DiFrisco, “and reduced him to some kind of bloodthirsty, syphilis-spreading marauder, and that is not the case.”

Not the entire case. We live in a time when heroes are ritualistically tarnished and, frankly, everybody is better off with the more accurate, though less flattering, narrative than with the pretty story. It’s easier for me to grasp the current inability of the government to confront our problems when I consider that it was formed on a lie —“All men are created equal” — that skirted the issue of slavery, kicking it down the pike to explode 75 years later. Ignoring our biggest problems is an American tradition since 1776.

“Columbus Day is an Italian pride holiday,” said Di Frisco. “We decry that fewer and fewer schools have it off. Here’s a man who planted the flag of Christianity on the shores of the new world and teachers are systemically taking the image of Columbus we all knew and they’ve turned him into a villain.”

Speaking of the flag of Christianity . . . but space grows short. Happy Columbus Day.

GREEN-Ellis rund for 2TDS

FOX BOROUGH, Mass. – In this NFL season of weekly gut checks and super-sized comebacks, the New York Jets seemed to have the New England Patriots right where they wanted them midway through the fourth quarter Sunday.
And Gillette Stadium was still packed. No one dared to leave early.

But all the drama was ultimately seized by the home team, as the Patriots exposed a Jets weakness — the run defense — as if it were a scab to be ripped apart.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis right. Green-Ellis left. Green-Ellis up the middle.

The Patriots kept moving the chains with the 215-pound back, and despite knowing exactly what Bill Belichick's team was trying to accomplish — chew the clock — the Jets' 28th-ranked defense was too feeble to do anything about it when it mattered most.

So much for another dramatic comeback. New England gave the ball to Green-Ellis, aka "The Law Firm," 10 times on a 13-play drive that consumed 6 minutes, 21 seconds and ended with Stephen Gostkowski's third field goal, a 28-yarder that iced a 30-21 victory.

"Situational football," Green-Ellis said. "Obviously, you don't want to give them the ball back. … You want to step up to the plate and knock it out of the park."

Green-Ellis, the latest back to shred New York's run defense, finished with a career-high 136 yards on 27 carries — including a 14-yard rumble off a direct snap to convert a crucial third down on the back-breaking march that cemented the Jets' third consecutive loss.

"That's disappointing," Jets linebacker David Harris said. "If you get off the field and get the ball back to the offense, we have a chance to win the game."

In front of his stall in a solemn visitors locker room, Harris seemed particularly disgusted recalling Green-Ellis' run around left end off the direct snap.

"That's a play we've seen on film," he said. "There were a couple 'got-to-have-it' plays, and that was one of them."

The concerns are mounting for the Jets (2-3), whose boisterous coach, Rex Ryan, has proclaimed all year — even during the lockout — that his team was destined to win the Super Bowl.

A week earlier, they were pummeled 34-14 in Baltimore as the Ravens defense dominated a weakened offensive line and returned three turnovers for touchdowns. Before that, they were gashed for 234 rushing yards in a 34-24 loss at the Oakland Raiders.

Now this. Rather than making a grand statement by knocking off the Patriots as they did here in the AFC playoffs in January, the Jets have completed an O-fer on an unusual stretch of three consecutive road games.

Said all-pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, "We've got to stop with the mental mistakes."

On the game-sealing drive — which left Ryan surprised by how committed the Patriots were to running the ball rather than leaning on quarterback Tom Brady — the Jets defense was stung by a error that left them in the wrong alignment that resulted in one of the big plays.

"If you make mistakes against that football team, they burn you," Ryan said of the Patriots. "I mean, they absolutely kill you. And they don't need any help, with the offense that they have."

Ryan said another crucial blown assignment came at the start of the second half, when Brady connected with Wes Welker for a 73-yard completion with a deep throw over the top of the coverage. On the first snap of the half, Welker (five catches, 124 yards) roamed free down the middle of the field, splitting between the cornerback and safety. It set up Brady's 2-yard TD toss to Deion Branch.

"Kind of looked like one of those, 'I got him, you take him (situations),' " Ryan said of the gaffe. "We never had anybody deep."

The Patriots (4-1) will take it, remaining atop the AFC East. Although Brady survived his most physical game of the season — disrupted often by Jets blitzes, knocked down at least a half-dozen times and sacked a season-high four times — he put up another 300-yard game to remain on track to set the NFL's single-season passing yardage record.

Brady completed 24 of 33 passes for 321 yards, with one TD and an interception at the end of the first half. The turnover would more accurately be accounted to tight end Aaron Hernandez, who returned after a two-game layoff because of a knee injury.

Hernandez, open at the goal line, failed to haul in the pass that wound up in the hands of Antonio Cromartie.

That was undoubtedly among the "plethora of mistakes" that left Belichick grumbling.

"We can do better in everything," Belichick said. "Our running game. Passing game. Overall execution. Red area. You can go right down the line. We're not playing a perfect game."

Still, the Patriots' problems pale when compared to the Jets' woes.

New England's defense, which entered the game ranked last in the NFL for yards allowed, produced its best game of the season in snuffing the Jets on three-and-outs on seven of 11 possessions.

Meanwhile, the Patriots offense scored 30 points for a 13th consecutive game, one shy of matching the record set by the St. Louis Rams in 1999-2000.

And they did it with balance. A week after rushing for a season-high 183 yards, the Patriots ran for 152 yards (4.3 per carry) on Sunday.

That's a trend the Patriots, who host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, hope to maintain.

"The running game is a team thing," Belichick said. "The better you run it, the better you can throw it. The better you throw it, the better you should be able to run it. So they kind of play off each other.

"It's hard to keep calling runs when you don't gain anything. After you call three or four of them and you're second-and-10 every time, it's hard to keep calling them, especially if you're moving the ball through the air. If you can match that production and have good, positive gains in the running game and then have them in the passing game, as a play caller, you feel confident and comfortable calling pretty much anything."

As the Patriots showed Sunday, such balance can really pay off at crunchtime.

"We need to do it," Brady said. "We have to run the ball. If they have a lot of DBs out there, then we have to run it. If they put big guys in, we still have to run it. You just can't throw the ball every single down against these guys. They make it too tough.

"We could have done a better job. We'll try to make some improvements and move on to the Cowboys."

Yanks whiff at home, season ends with Game 5 loss

Yanks whiff at home, season ends with Game 5 loss

New York Yankees' Mark Teixeira reacts after temmate Nick Swisher struck out with bases loaded in the seventh inning in Game 5 of baseball's American League division series agisnt the detroit Tigers Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 in New York.

NEW YORK—One by one, almost all the big-money boppers had their chance.

Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher.

Bases loaded, two runners on, just about every conceivable opportunity. The New York Yankees never came up with that clutch hit Thursday night, and suddenly their season is over.

No parade up Broadway, no sparkling World Series ring to go with the 27 others. No fairy-tale ending for Jorge Posada.

Just a long, cold winter to look back and wonder why one of baseball's best lineups whiffed when it mattered most.

Doug Fister and three relievers stopped the Yankees in their tracks, pitching their way out of several pressure-packed jams and sending the Detroit Tigers into the AL championship series with a 3-2 victory in Game 5.

"I thought we had it, man," Cano said.

New York manager Joe Girardi tried almost everything. He went to the bullpen early, pulling his ailing rookie starter, Ivan Nova, after two shaky innings. CC Sabathia came in for the first relief appearance of his professional career.

None of it was enough. The bats let the Yankees down.

"This is a really empty feeling," Girardi said, "and it hurts."

Derek Jeter made a bid for a go-ahead homer in the eighth, but his drive to right was caught just in front of the fence. Jeffrey Maier was nowhere to be found to haul it over the wall as the young fan did to help New York in the 1996 playoffs.

Quite literally, the Yankees came up just short.

"Anything less than a championship is a lost year," Mark Teixeira said. "None of us were ready to go home. I don't think any of us thought we were going home. We had a lot of confidence."

They went 0 for 4 with the bases loaded and stranded 11. They finished 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position, and neither hit delivered a run. Cano cracked a solo homer that gave him nine RBIs in the series and Teixeira drew a bases-loaded walk.

    That was it.

A stirring season that featured feel-good celebrations for Jeter's 3,000th hit and Mariano Rivera's record-setting save ended with a whimper.

"The level of disappointment is through the roof," Sabathia said.

In a quiet clubhouse, the 40-year-old Posada got choked up and cut off questions about his future.

"I gave it all on the field," said the longtime Yankees catcher, in the final year of his contract.

And when Rodriguez, in a most fitting finish, went down swinging against Jose Valverde for the final out, the Tigers rushed out of the dugout to celebrate on New York's home field. Bookends for Rodriguez -- he whiffed to end last season, too, in the ALCS against Texas.Continued...

The Ubiquitous Nematode: How a Simple Worm Conquered the Earth

Schematic drawing of the anatomy of a male nem...Image via WikipediaThe Ubiquitous Nematode: How a Simple Worm Conquered the Earth

Although often called “nematode worms,” members of the Phylum Nematoda are only distantly related to earthworms in the garden and marine worms in the sea. They are among the most diverse of all animals, though most people in developed countries are only ever likely to encounter them in the form of the pinworm (threadworm), a common childhood infection. They occupy an astonishing range of habitats, but to the casual observer one nematode looks much like the next.

Nematodes Among the Most Diverse of Animals

Soybean cyst nematode and her egg. Photograph by the US Agricultural Research Service.
If you were to study a nematode closely, you would see that it has a slender, tubular body like an earthworm, but without segments. You would have to look very carefully, though, as most measure just a couple of millimeters and the smallest are visible only through a microscope. At the other end of the scale, the largest parasitic species can grow to 30 cm or more, and the longest nematode ever recorded was an 8 meter specimen found in the placenta of a sperm whale.

Experts on nematodes – known as nematologists – have traditionally distinguished one species from another on the basis of differences in the shape of the head and reproductive organs, and the presence or absence of various bristles, ridges and other structures on the surface of the body. However, with the advent of molecular techniques and DNA sequencing has come a glimpse of the extraordinary diversity of the Nematoda.

More than 20,000 species have been identified to date, though it is clear that many more remain to be described. Some nematologists estimate the total number of nematode species to be as high as one million, or even 100 million. To put this into perspective, there are fewer than 5000 species of mammal worldwide.

Nematodes are found in a greater range of habitats than any other multicellular organism. Although only a minority of the known species are free-living, they are found all over the world, from the poles to the tropics, on mountains and in deserts, in lakes, oceans, rivers and seas.

Nematodes are anatomically simple animals. Photograph by Nemaplex.
The only limiting factor seems to be water, and even here nematodes’ needs are minimal. A thin film of moisture in the gap between two barren rocks is enough to support a thriving population of many thousand individuals. Other species have been described that live exclusively in vinegar, in the glue used to bind books and in German beer mats.

Nematodes have been found living in cracks in the Earth’s crust, 3.6 km below the surface – far deeper than any other known animal. Here, withstanding a temperature of 48°C and a pressure around 1000 times greater than we surface-dwellers experience, these tiny creatures survive by feeding on bacteria. Among the nematodes found in this extreme environment was a previously unknown species, now named Halicephalobus mephisto after Mephistopheles, the Faustian Lord of the Underworld. The scientists who discovered H. mephisto suggest that, when searching for extraterrestrial life, we should look beneath the surface before declaring a planet dead.

    Parasitic Nematodes
Most nematodes are parasitic, living on or inside the bodies of other animals and plants. Individuals are often parasitized by several different species that have evolved to live in different parts of the body – another example of the remarkable diversity of these simple animals. Writing in 1914, N.A. Cobb of the US Bureau of Plant Industry poetically suggested that:

“[I]f all the matter in the universe except the nematodes were swept away, our world would still be dimly recognizable…its mountains, hills, vales, rivers, lakes, and oceans represented by a film of nematodes…The location of the various plants and animals would still be decipherable…[and] in many cases even their species could be determined by an examination of their erstwhile nematode parasites.”

Why Are There So Many Nematode Species?
It used to be thought that all nematodes were essentially the same, which raised the question of how such homogeneous animals could evolve into so many different species in so many different ecological niches. However, more recent genetic studies have revealed that nematodes are also among the most genetically diverse of all animals. For example, looking at the genes that encode part of the cell’s protein-producing machinery – the ribosome – two nematode species can be as distinct from one another as a monkey is from a mouse. Given these newer findings, the diversity of the nematodes is rather less surprising.

    Nematodes Are Everywhere
The phylum Nematoda may contain more species than any group of animals on Earth, and they are almost certainly the largest group numerically. A single handful of soil contains thousands of these microscopic creatures, but due to their small size humans are generally unaware of their presence around – and inside – everyone of us.

Review: Tere Mere Phere

    Review: Tere Mere Phere

Though comedy has grown into a lush genre over the years, few directors in India have mastered the art of relaying it on celluloid. Tere Mere Phere is an earnest endeavour by actress turned director Deepa Sahi.

Tere Mere Phere is not only a romantic comedy, it is a black comedy, slapstick comedy, satire, comedy of manners, screwball comedy -- all rolled in one. Deepa's attempt to weave in every sub-genre of comedy is probably the nemesis of the movie.

The premise of this film is about compatibility in a marriage. The story revolves around two couples - Rahul and Pooja (Jagrat Desai and Sasha Goradia) and Jai and Muskaan (Vinay Pathak and Riya Sen). Their lives get intertwined by fate.

A squabbling Rahul and Pooja are on their way to Shimla by flight. They are on the verge of splitting after three days of honeymooning in a motor home, travelling in Himachal.

But the aborted landing of their aircraft takes them back to their incomplete honeymoon with Jai for company. Jai is desperate to meet his sweetheart Muskaan, who would be forcibly married by her brother to some other bloke.

The narration slips in and out of numerous cantankerous moments of flashbacks to reveal to a lovelorn Jai as to why they (Rahul and Pooja) are bickering all the time. By the end of it, Jai is convinced, by watching Rahul and Pooja, that familiarity breeds contempt.

He decides that marriage is not for him. He makes a decision to desert his waiting Muskaan. Roles reverse with the climax culminating at the hilarious fast forward wedding of Jai and Muskaan.

The scuffle in the aircraft cabin with force fed humour sets the tone of the film for a mediocre fare. The scenes that follow seem substandard and clumsy. With no detailing done, the characters seem to be shallow.

The plot has no major inciting moments and with screechy loud dialogues like - Tum kya Eskimo thi?, Tum kya chipkali ho? and "You are queen of Main Main", No you are king of che chee. The script along with the dialogues seems to be the weakest point of the film.

The film belongs to the newcomers Jagat Desai and Sasha Goradia. For first timers, they exude confidence. Sushmita Mukherjee as Rahul's overbearing mother is convincing. Riya Sen with a naturally poker face and sing song expressionless dialogue delivery is a bad choice for a comedy film.

Vinay Patak is wasted as he hardly has anything to do in the film.

On the other hand, the verdant Himalayan terrain is beautifully captured by cinematographer Christo Bakalov. The film has been shot in beautiful and unusual parts of Himachal, especially in the newly opened Kinnaur Valley. The climax of the film has been shot at Hatu Peak and Jhamunda (near Tethys Resort, Narkanda).

The music by Shivangi R. Kashyap is nothing to write home about.

The first half of the film is just tolerable. The second half has its moments of extreme comedy. The end is equally disappointing leaving the viewers wondering as to why you wanted to witness this meaningless marriage.

Mahindra & Mahindra rolls out first Global SUV XUV 500 at Rs 10.8 lakh

Mahindra & Mahindra Limited LogoImage via WikipediaMahindra & Mahindra rolls out first Global SUV XUV 500 at Rs 10.8 lakh

MUMBAI/PUNE: When Anand Mahindra launched the much-awaited XUV 500 Wednesday evening, the vice chairman & managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra invited those present to guess the price of the feature-packed sports utility vehicle. The estimates that flew around amidst the glitz were mostly on the higher side of Rs 13 lakh.

Few expected the jaw-dropping price range that was announced 12 hours later: Rs 10.8 lakh (ex-Delhi) for the base version, and Rs 12.88 lakh for the fully-loaded top-end XUV 500 with all-wheel drive.

"Mahindra has hit the sweet spot," proclaimed Hormazd Sorabjee, editor of Autocar India, citing the vehicle's aggressive styling, interior space, price and super premium features such as touch-screen multimedia system and rain-sensing wipers besides all the modern safety features including six airbags.

The XUV 500 may well make the going extremely tough for Tata Motors' crossover Tata Aria, which is priced higher but lags behind in features, and may impact top-end Scorpio and even premium off-roaders such as Ford Endeavour.

It looks an ideal vehicle for India's largest utility vehicle maker's global ambitions. "The XUV 500 will get us the high seat in global auto world. It is a strong and bold step towards becoming a globally recognized SUV brand," Anand Mahindra told ET on the sidelines of a press conference in Pune.

The company will launch the vehicle in South Africa in a couple of days. It plans to make inroads into Australia and Latin America in the next six months. M&M will also drive the XUV 500 into Western Europe, Russia and China where it has no presence.

Pawan Goenka, president, automotive and farm equipment sector, M&M said he would be disappointed if the company does not achieve at least 20% of total production for the exports market.

M&M aims to export XUV 500 to over 30 countries in the next couple of years. It also plans assembly of the vehicle at its subsidiary Ssangyong's plants in South Korea and Brazil.

Adil Jal Darukhanawala, editor in chief of Zig Wheels, said the state-of-the-art offering should do well overseas. Other experts such as Ernst & Young's automotive sector national leader Rakesh Batra and Autocar's Sorabjee, however, said the XUV does not meet global standards, but will generate demand in India.

M&M will begin bookings for the XUV 500 in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune on Saturday. It will be rolled out across the country in 6-9 months.

It is the second launch in three days after Honda Brio small car as carmakers bet on new vehicles and discounts to revive the Indian car market, where sales fell for two consecutive months in July and August.

The XUV 500 helps M&M enter the premium SUV market. It confirms to Europe crash regulations and is equipped with a host of safety features like ABS, EBD, ESP and six airbags. It is loaded with more features than even premium sports utility vehicles like Chevrolet Captiva, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner.

Yet it was developed with an investment of 650 crore, which is 10% lower than development cost in the past, said people involved with the project.

Despite the aggressive price tag, Anand Mahindra said it has not compromised on margins. "For M&M the bottomline always comes first and our focus will remain the same," he said.

Industry experts say that its monocoque frame construction makes the vehicle lighter and cheaper to produce than Tata Aria, which is built ladder-on-frame construction. Check out Brand Equity's Most Trusted Brands List 2011

Force: Movie Review

    Force: Movie Review
    Force.jpg
Force , more or less, is an offshoot of the success of Ghajini with a similar structure of a hardcore action film intersected with a lighthearted love story running in flashback plus a 6-pack-abs hero, a blabbermouth heroine, a love-song in desert and a gory climax. Also its remake of a Tamil film ( Kaakha Kaakha ) starring the same actor ( Suriya) from the original Ghajini . Incidentally down South, Ghajini (2005) was an offshoot of the success of Kaakha Kaakha (2003).

Beyond being a remake, Force has a regular revenge drama plotline where the hero (John Abraham) kills villain's brother and the villain (Vidyut Jamwal) is out to get the hero and his family (Genelia D'Souza). This one-liner summarizes the soul of the film. Why Force still has that impact is because of its seething spirit and electrifying energy that the director brings to the proceedings, while never letting it go overboard esp. when there is a strong tendency with the genre. Accepted that the action is heavy-duty, the villain is vicious and together when this lethal combo deracinates the hero, it gets cinematically depressing at times. But these extremities lend the film its individuality. So despite having a refreshing romance track too, Force isn't exactly for the fainthearted!

The film isn't exactly designed as a realistic cinema that exposes the functioning of the drug trade. The narcotics backdrop is employed to give John Abraham and his team more defined characterization as cops. So the modus operandi of the drug mafia is rushed through rapid yet convincing montages. The story is pretty much predictable but the storytelling is swift enough to not let you notice the loose ends and smart enough to keep you riveted.

The love story between John and Genelia, though not out of the box, is sublime and sparkling enough. Since John carries a no-nonsense attitude, much of the effervescence can be attributed to Genelia who is charming in her chirpy character. Their romance has a steady buildup because the charisma in their chemistry is directly proportional to the viciousness that follows in the vengeance in the second half.

The action is raw and involves more physical combats. Action director Allan Amin choreographs the stunt sequences with the requisite vigour and esp. noteworthy is the extensive chase sequence when John and Vidyut come face-to-face for the first time. But more than the action, it's the vindictiveness of the villain that scares you more. The second half almost works like a horror film with the viewer anticipating with fear on how would the evil strike next. There is a continual sense of looming danger.

For an action film, Force has some really well-written dialogues. The lines have genuine impact and aren't blatantly jingoistic to win mass-appeal like in most recent actioners. The director cuts off melodrama and tries to bring subtlety to a full-blown action film. Also he tries to strike a balance between the love story and the revenge drama. While at the outset one feels to have lost director Nishikant Kamat, who gave us sensitive and sensible masterpieces in the form of Mumbai Meri Jaan and Dombivli Fast , to masala movies, he still manages to keep Force a level higher than the formulaic Singham or the desi Dabangg .

John Abraham looks cool and convincing in the role of a cold-blooded cop. Force exploits his brawny physique to the best and gives him ample scope to play a full-fledged action role without being blatant about it. While Genelia is bubbly as always, she thankfully doesn't go overboard in her chatterbox character this time. She is at her graceful best. Vidyut Jamwal makes a confident debut as the menacing villain and adds venom to his cruel character. He is amazing in the action sequences and spiteful as the insensitive killer. Mohnish Behl gets a strong supporting role after ages and does absolute justice to it. Sandhya Mridul is decent. Anaitha Nair is wasted. Raj Babbar gets no scope

I don't miss being married: Lata Mangeshkar

Indian singer Lata MangeshkarImage via WikipediaI don't miss being married: Lata Mangeshkar

Last few weeks Lata Mangeshkar has been a little caught up. Having wrapped up the Ganpati puja at her Peddar Road residence, the melody queen says there are no special plans for her 82nd birthday today. "I never plan, kyonki jo hona hai wohi hota hai," she smiles. But the evening will see the legendary singer being honoured with the newly instituted `Hridaynath award' for Lifetime Achievement by Amitabh Bachchan. Thereafter she is off to Pune for her usual holiday. Exceprts of an interview...

You are the first recipient of the award that's instituted in your brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar's name
I am proud to accept this award. He is my guru though he is younger to me. I am very proud of him and my other siblings. Yeh bachche mere saamne bade huwe hai aur gaurav ki baat yeh hai ki kisine apne bure waqt pe ya apne mukaam pohochne mei mere madad nahin li. Even though our mother brought them up unke parvarish pe thoda bahut haath mera bhi hai. They are like my children.

In hindsight, what has been the one most enriching and regretting factor in your life respectively?
I am most happy and at ease when I sing. As for regrets, I have none, because whatever God gives it's meant for you and whatever you miss was never for you. I am only thankful to God.

Is there any sense of loneliness that you feel sometimes?
Kabhi kabhi mei ek khaalipan mehsoos karti hun. All my friends are gone..so are the golden days!

Are you in constant touch with friends from the industry?
Nargis and Meena Kumar were my close friends. We used to be in touch regularly till they passed away. Dev Anand is another person who I am in touch with. Otherwise from this generation, Anu Malik often calls me to chat. I am also close to Aamir Khan, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan and Sonu Nigam.

Why do you always holiday in Pune and London?
You forgot Kolhapur. I have a house there too. I often run away to these places when I want to escape Mumbai's cacophony. These places have different and lovely memories for me. But for the last few years I have stopped going to London for personal reasons.

Other than music, what else are you involved in?
Photography. I love clicking pictures. I also love cooking. Everyone loves my gaajar ka halwaa and pasanda. I also prefer sitting in my room and reading. Books are a different world I would like to get lost into.

So have you clicked any new pictures?
Nowadays, I have stopped clicking pictures because I do not understand the functioning of a digital camera which is in vogue. Mujhe acche nahin lagte. I love black and white
    pictures.

But you can still click with your old camera?
I have sold all of them because they are hardly in use these days. I don't think anyone values that kind of camera anymore.

Among the sisters who are you closest to ?
I have no favourites and I love all three of them. We share everything like all regular
    siblings.

So what about the famous Lata-Asha rivalry?
Aisa kuch nahin hai. Jyadaatar woh sab aafwae the. Yes, we were different in nature. I was the quiet type whereas she was the restless and on edge kind. Badi himmat hai yeh ladki mein. She's a versatile singer and a legend in her own way. But we are sisters and quite close. She comes and sits with me and shares everything. We have one door in our house. My bedroom door opens to Asha's room.

Lastly Lataji, like every girl who grows up with dreams of marriage, do you miss being married?
No. Everything happens according to God's wish. Jo hote hai acche ke liye hote hai aur jo nahin hote who aur acche ke liye hote hai. Had you asked me this about four to five decades back, perhaps you would have got a different answer. But today I have no room for such thoughts.
